ECAC to Sponsor Third Annual Softball Classic
Cape Cod, Massachusetts (January 3, 2007)
- Interim Commissioner of the ECAC Steve
Bamford today announced that the Conference will again
sponsor the third annual ECAC Softball Fall Classic
Weekend on Saturday-Sunday, September 22-23, 2007 in Lowell,
Massachusetts. Joe Argo, the ECAC softball officiating coordinator,
is organizing the event, which is open to all Division II and III
softball teams from the New England area.
"Joe has done a tremendous job managing and enhancing the ECAC
softball officiating program and this weekend will further benefit
the umpires and institutions in providing the student-athletes a
great collegiate experience," said Bamford. "The
weekend provides member institutions with an opportunity to play
their fall competition in a central location. The ECAC
will be evaluating a number of umpires who will be assigned to work
throughout the two-day event."
There is no cost for the teams to register and participate in the
event. However, as in previous years, each participating team will
be asked to supply six new softballs for use during their games.
There will be organized games on six fields throughout the two-day event. The games will begin at 9 a.m. and continue through 4 p.m. Teams can elect to play one or two days. Umpire crews will be provided at no cost to the teams while ECAC observers will have an opportunity to evaluate new and prospective umpires throughout the weekend.
Deadline for registering teams is August 15th. Schools interested in participating in this event should contact Steve Bamford, Senior Associate Commissioner (508/771-5060 ext. 211 orsbamford@ecac.org).
The ECAC assigned officials for 595 softball games last spring and is looking to build on their roster of 225 officials. The conference provides officiating for 15 sports and has more than 5,100 officials. The ECAC assigns officials in Divisions I, II and III, including baseball, men's and women's basketball, fencing, field hockey, football, men's gymnastics, men's and women's ice hockey, men's lacrosse, men's and women's soccer, softball and wrestling. In addition, the ECAC officiating bureaus provide clinics and workshops, improving the level of officiating and attracting the most qualified collegiate officials. The bureaus also assign for both conference and NCAA championships
