CENTERVILLE, Mass. – Eastern College Athletic Conference history was made on December 30, 2012, at the College of Staten Island when the father-sons officiating team of Phil Sallustio, Sr., Phil Sallustio, Jr., and Steve Sallustio all officiated a Division III men’s basketball game In the Tournament of Heros. The game marked the first time in ECAC history that three members of the same family had officiated a basketball contest.
Phil Sallustio, Sr. has been a College Basketball Officials Association member for 26 seasons. Phil Jr., is in his third season, while son and brother Steve is in his first year with the CBOA.
“It was a great experience working with my brother and dad,” Phil Jr., said. “When the game starts, though, you forget about it and it’s like any other three man crew reffing a college basketball game. Your main goal is to get the plays correct.”
The game marked the second time the Sallustios have worked a game together, having done a high school game last year between Fordham Prep and Regis High School.
Athletics runs in the Sallustio family, as both Phil Jr., and Steve played basketball at Iona College, and Phil Sr., played baseball and basketball at Long Island University-Brooklyn.
