Assistant coach Kelsy Ross was promoted to head women’s soccer coach at Bates. Ross replaces Jim Murphy, who coached the Bobcats for 17 seasons.

Men’s and women’s volleyballMillicent Sylvan-Van Norden was hired as head women’s volleyball coach at Coppin State. She has nine seasons head coaching experience at Alcorn State, North Carolina A&T and most recently at South Carolina State.

Maine named Paul Ferguson its next president. Ferguson succeeds Robert Kennedy, who last year announced his intention to retire in June 2011. A California native, Ferguson has served as provost and vice chancellor for academic affairs at Southern Illinois-Edwardsville since 2006. He holds degrees from Whittier and UC Davis. He begins his new duties July 1.

Women’s basketball – Virginia tabbed Joanne Boyle, former coach at California.

Women’s basketball – Longwood hired Bill Reinson, who had been interim head coach since December. He had been an assistant with the men’s team at Longwood since September 2002.

Football assistants – Towson named Reno Ferri running backs coach and recruiting coordinator. Ferri comes from Akron … Rensselaer tabbed Guido Falbo to be offensive coordinator. He had been an assistant at Massachusetts.

Men’s and women’s ice hockey – Rensselaer extended head coach Seth Appert’s contract through the 2017-18 season.
